The final week of September has a special place in football-loving fans’ hearts. It brings with it the excitement of new gameplay features, unique kits, and feel-good songs that will have you singing along in no time.
The release of FIFA 23 sees the final edition of EA SPORTS’ collaboration with FIFA in creating the world’s most played sports video game franchise.
After 30 headline editions of the game, dating back to FIFA 93, it’s time to analyse what the game has in store for its grand finale…

FIFA Ultimate Team
Since its introduction in 2009, FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) has risen from being the new kid on the block, to being by far the most popular mode across the game.
This year’s edition sees a brand new look for the game mode, where positional links have been removed and the overall squad chemistry has been replaced with individual player chemistry, making it easier than ever to build the starting XI of your dreams.
As well as FUT’s unrivalled community-based play and squad building properties, it’s well known for featuring special edition items such as ICONs, allowing gamers to recreate infamous goals and play with legendary players from years gone by. This year sees at least three new ICONs enter the game as Gerd Müller, Jairzinho and Xabi Alonso are all added.
Women’s Football; It’s in the Game
This summer saw a record breaking summer for women’s football as the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 took the world by storm. FIFA 23 will be building on this success by becoming the first edition of EA SPORTS and FIFA’s collaborative franchise to feature a female footballer on the global cover, as Sam Kerr (Chelsea Women FC) joins Kylian Mbappé as the two cover stars of the game.
To add to Kerr’s star role, for the first time ever, this years’ game will feature women’s professional clubs, leagues and tournaments, in order to create a more inclusive experience for FIFA players.
This includes the integration of the Barclay’s Women’s Super League (WSL) and Division 1 Féminine (D1 Arkema), plus the inclusion of two authentic stadiums: Manchester City and Angel City FC. The game will also feature the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) as well as, next spring the UEFA Women’s Champions League and next summer, the Women’s FIFA World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup
Every four years, as the world prepares to watch the brightest stars battle for football’s greatest prize; the FIFA World Cup, EA SPORTS FIFA also join in the football celebration. This year they will be integrating the FIFA World Cup into FIFA 23.
FIFA 23 takes this football celebration to a new level, as it’s the first time that both the men’s and women’s tournament will be available in the game. Featuring both the FIFA Men’s World Cup Qatar 2022 and FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023, the game mode will feature brand new tournament modes that will ensure that the world’s game is open for all.
As well as a special tournament features for the FIFA World Cups, FIFA 23 sees EA SPORTS collaborate with Marvel to transform FUT Heroes, into 21 special edition items, that feature former World Cup stars such as Diego Forlán, Park Ji sung, Yaya Touré, Harry Kewell and Peter Crouch.
The Future: EA SPORTS FC
Next year, the world’s most popular football game becomes EA SPORTS FC.
EA has promised that the game will include the same great experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs and athletes. It will also keep and continue to grow popular features such as Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs and VOLTA Football.
Next year will see a revolution in football gaming.
